Apple Spotlight not allowing typing

OK the other day, I noticed that when I typed ⌘ ␣ (or command space) on my macOS Sierra, the Spotlight bar popped up but I was unable to type anything into the spotlight bar. Drove me nuts. Tried a bunch of crap that never worked. Finally decided to kill the Spotlight process and it worked.

sudo killall Spotlight

Problem solved.
