Browser Wars on my Mac

I run the following browser on my MacBook Pro

  • Safari (Obviously)
  • Firefox
  • Chrome
  • Brave
  • Opera
  • Microsoft Edge
  • Tor

I wanted to test the different browsers and see their performance.  I found this website that tests browser performance.  Below is an excerpt from their page.

Basemark Web 3.0 is a comprehensive web browser performance benchmark that tests how well your mobile or desktop system can use web based applications.
This benchmark includes various system and graphic tests that use the web recommendations and features. After running the benchmark you will see how your
system performed compared to other systems and browsers in Basemark Power Board. Basemark Web 3.0 measures real-world client-side performance to detect browser
bottlenecks.

The higher the number, the better the results.

First things first, I want to give you information about my set up.  I have multiple MacBooks (the subject of another blog post).  I have wanted to set up my office to use one MacBook Pro as a “Desktop” computer with a large monitor to work from home (prior to the coronavirus) and I finally made it happen…. and just in time.

Here is my set up at about 80% completion.  I also bought a new chair that I desperately needed due to back issues I have struggled with for years and years and years.

So with this setup, I have a large monitor connected via USB C and the lid stays closed 100% of the time.  The downside is I do not have TouchID but I am holding out hope that Apple will create an external TouchID device to use on situations like mine and desktop computers.  But I digress.  🙂

Here are the specs of my computer

I am planning on purchasing the new 64GB MacBook Pro and will put my 2018 MacBook Pro with 32GB as my Desktop laptop and then give this one to my son.

Microsoft Edge for MacOS

Edge for MacOS

Surprisingly, Microsoft Edge had the best performance.  I did not even know Microsoft made a browser for macOS (Thanks Omar Ortiz for pointing that out)

Anyone that has followed my posts will know that I give Microsoft grief, mostly because of past versions of software.  Windows 10 is much better than any other version and if I had to (God help me), I COULD use Windows 10 as my daily OS as long as I could have the Ubuntu integration since I use a lot of Bash scripting.  So here is to the results of my test….

Need to eat some humble pie 🙂

Hope this helps.
